Unable to open pst-file that is open in outlook

I am trying to view the structure of a pst-file while it is open in Outlook 2007, but Outlook is locking (parts of?) the file.

We are writing a outlook-addin which synchronizes large amounts of data, and if we were able to read / write directly to the pst-file this would speed up the process considerably.

Any workaround? (BTW: Closing the pst in Outlook is not an option…)

Does Outlook 2010 behave similarly?

Yeah, Outlook grabs an exclusive read/write lock on the file. This is necessary for data consistency purposes and both Outlook 2007 and 2010 are the same in this respect. The only way to access data in the PST file with Outlook (or any other MAPI client for that matter) is through the MAPI APIs or the Outlook OM.
